Barrier Islands
Ocean-front beaches ideally are protected by natural islands, better known as “barrier islands”. They typically are not of great elevation, may be a few miles from shore, and their long, narrow sh\ape is parallel to the beach front.
These islands provide desired protection to the beaches on the main body of land. Unfortunately, hurricanes are known to impose great forces on some of the barrier islands and have reduced or actually eliminated some of them.
To reverse this trend, many organizations have provided artificial reefs.
