Positioning the Entryway to Harbors & Marinas
Many developers and marina owners spend substantial monies to protect the entrance to their locations. Typically they install the rock and rubber “gold standard” of breakwaters. These systems are quite costly, especially if the water depths are relatively deep and, of course, they impact the sea floor marine life.
Unfortunately, they sometimes overlook the key issue of the direction of storms. If the prevalent storm direction is parallel to the coast line, this may be no problem. However, many have ignored the prevalence of storms offshore bearing directly into the entrance and actually increasing the risks.
